Rural School

It's just a county schoolhouse
Desolate in the evening sun.
The door is closed, the hasp secured;
It's useful days are done.

But lets take one last book inside-
The desks, the books, the bell.
Now silence settles like the dust
Where busy footsteps fell.

A spirit lives within this room,
It whispers of the day
When lessons strected through many books,
Brief pages tagged for play.

And generatons labored here
On Rs like Rockerville's,
On history, writing-lessons
As numerous as the hills.

We will recall the friendships made,
Some binding through the years.
Character blossomed in this room,
And hopes, and dreams, and tears.

But now the school's deserted,
Progress snapped the lock.
There's no place for nostalgia-
No reverse on history's clock.

The buggy, too, stirs memories,
Though there's no place for one.
It's just a county schoolhouse
Desolate in the evening sun...
